For our first talk, we’re focusing on one of the UK’s most-loved plants: hydrangeas.
Spend an hour with homegrown horticultural experts Davie and Brian as they share practical advice on caring for hydrangeas throughout the growing season. From encouraging healthy blooms to solving common problems and answering your own questions, you’ll leave with plenty of tips to try at home.

🌸 Did you know hydrangeas can change colour?
Some varieties of hydrangeas can change colour depending on the soil they’re planted in.
- 💗 Pink hydrangeas – triggered by alkaline soil
- 💙 Blue hydrangeas – triggered by acidic soil
- 💜 Purple blooms – often appear when soil conditions sit somewhere in between

🌿 Meet Davie and Brian
As homegrown’s resident horticultural experts, Davie and Brian have spent decades helping gardeners of all abilities grow with confidence.
Davie: with over 30 years of hands-on experience in plant care and garden advice, Davie is passionate about helping customers bring their gardens to life. From seasonal planting advice to solving common gardening challenges, he’s always on hand to share practical tips and expert guidance.
Brian: having studied Horticulture at Harlow College, Brian brings a wealth of knowledge in plant care, garden design, and landscaping. He also co-runs our popular Genius Bar sessions, helping customers plan, plant, and style their outdoor spaces with confidence.
Topics Davie and Brian will cover:
- choosing the right hydrangea for your garden
- sun vs shade requirements
- the colour-changing magic of hydrangeas
- watering, feeding and fertilising
- common problems
- maximising blooms – including a live demonstration on how to pot a hydrangea successfully
